Magnesium oxide, hydroxide and carbonate share two basic properties make them valuable in health-related products and applications.

• Acid neutralisation
All the magnesia products noted above are basic and can serve to neutralize stomach acids. The major pharmaceutical application is in the preparation of antacid products for the treatment of excess stomach acidity. DSP’s range of magnesia products are found in medicinal preparations that are used either directly for the neutralisation of excess acidity, or indirectly to aid the prevention of the development of excess acid conditions. Once example of the latter is the use of antacid medications based on magnesia products, together with the obligatory and regular ingestion of medicaments that promote acidity such as aspirin.

• Dietary Magnesium
Magnesia products serve as a source of supplemental dietary magnesium. Several studies over the last two decades have shown that it is essential to obtain a sufficient level of magnesium in the diet in order to maintain health. Lack of magnesium has been indicated as a cause in ailments relating to blood pressure, heart disease and hypertension. Magnesium is generally supplied in dietary supplements in the form of mineral and vitamin tablets, often in conjunction with other vital macro-elements, and most often in tablet form. Magnesium has also shown to assist in the absorption of calcium in the body.
Magnesia products are used as a food additive, sometimes for the supplemental dietary value of the magnesium, but more often because of functionalities supplied by the magnesium compound. These include control of pH in the preparation of acidic foods, maintenance of color especially in the industrial preparation of green foods, and as a free-flowing agent, desiccant or refining agent in food powders.

Product Safety
All the products meet the requirements of the USP, BP and EP, as well as the FCC, with regard to chemical purity, and in regard to most of the requirements regarding physical properties. All DSP roducts are characterized by extremely low levels of all metals, and specifically by low levels of lead, being easily in conformance with Proposition 65 in regard to this element.
