NPD and Health Claims
One of the single biggest questions I get asked when presenting either a new product or a new idea for a product is “does it have health claims?” Many manufactures have actually refused to submit health claims for their ingredients for fear of an adverse verdict against them. You can certainly understand this from their point of view, wanting to protect the investment they have made to substantiate their ingredient.
Should the lack of a health claim though stifle new product development? The answer to this question should be no!
Companies should still continue to develop and bring new products to the market to give them an edge if and when health claims can be used for a particular ingredient. There is an old saying that “first up best dressed” If you launch a new product that has a proven sales record before a health claim is granted you will be in a much better position to capitalize on the new marketing opportunities at hand. A company launching a product after this point will I believe be put on the back foot. Don’t let the health claims dictate how your business grows.
